SOAP Version Mismatch Exception in SOA 11g

Recentlyone of the queries that was posted in the practice forum was regarding the SOAPversion mismatch

Issue

Facingthe below exception in client environment when an external client is invokingbpel service deployed on SOA Suite 11.1.1.4.

Theytried the option of generating SOAP1.2 binding in the wsdl (i.e., open the wsdlin design mode and drag the ‘binding’ component on to the centre pallete, andchoose the option of SOAP 1.2) and the WSDL file will have the namespace like http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap12/which is still different from the namespace client is sending.

1. When the SOAP 1.2generated wsdl is opened in browser, only SOAP 1.1 namespace is visible. Is theSOA suite overriding SOAP 1.2 with 1.1? How do we enforce SOA suite to useSOAP1.2 namespace?

Solution

The problem is due to version mismatch Clientis expecting a SOAP 1.2 service where as we are exposing a SOAP 1.1 service. Bydefault the Jdev created BPEL service will be using SOAP 1.1 .The way to changeit is to mention a soap version as part of the service in composite.xml

Incomposite.xml, add the soap version for the exposed service and redeploy, itwill start using SOAP 1.2 bindings. By default if soap version is not specifiedit uses soap 1.1.

Human Workflow - with multiple callbacks

In one of my discussions with a customer, there was a query regarding the Human workflow and the flow of control between different activities.They wanted to know how the BPEL service and Workflow service interacts witheach other. If you see the InitiateTaskoperation it is a synchronous operation which calls the workflow service andpasses the payload and task attributes and gets the control back to BPELprocess.

In case of a basic flow the initiate task is executed,workflow service instance is created and service waits in queue of user to beapproved/rejected or complete an outcome. Where as in BPEL the control returnsafter initiateTask invocation, but the next activity is a receive callback fromWorkflow service which will only trigger once the user completes his action. Sothe BPEL process instance gets dehydrated and waits for action.

In case of designing an advanced flow with multiplecallbacks, the BPEL generates extra code to handle multiple operation updatesthat happen from the workflow service. The workflow service will run as anindependent process flow which has java API calls to invoke the callbackoperations defined in the TaskServicewsdl to give back control to BPEL after differenttask stages. In BPEL, the flow goes into a while loop waiting for a callback fromthe workflow service. The Pick activity as shown below will be looking foronMessage from ->OnTaskCompleted,OnTaskAssigned,OnTaskUpdatedand OnSubTaskUpdated.

onTaskCompleted — This callback is invoked when the task is completed, expired, withdrawn, or errored.
onTaskAssigned — This callback is invoked when the task is assigned to a new set of assignees due to the following actions:

Outcome update
Skip current assignment
Override routing slip

onTaskUpdated — This callback is invoked for any other update to the task that does not fall in the onTaskComplete or onTaskAssigned callback. This includes updates on tasks due to request for information, submit information, escalation, reassign, and so on.
onSubTaskUpdated — This callback is invoked for any update to a subtask.

To go toadvanced mode, select the Allow task and routing customizations in BPELcallbacks check box. This will enablethe workflow service to notify the BPELprocess using OnMessage callbacks every time a task is routed to a differentuser or when the task status changes

Coming to my customer requirements, they wanted to benotified incase the task is reassigned for more than 3 times .In case of areassign the OnTaskUpdated callback will be invoked and control will getinto the OnTaskUpdated parallel flow where you can add the requiredcustomizations.. So this logic was embedded in this callback flow. After theflow is completed it again goes back and waits in the while loop till next callbackevent is activated from the workflow service.

The figure defines the human workflow process flowinside the BPEL. The while loop enables the BPEL process instance to wait onpick activity till the task status gets updated to task completion/expiration/error/stale/withdrawn.This brings in multiple options for customization within the BPEL based on theworkflow status/updates. This is really good feature using multiple callbacks functionality.

Weblogic:Classloading and Classloader Analysis Tool

There is a Classloading Analysis Tool(CAT)provided in Weblogic server(PS3) which helps you to monitor the class loadingpattern that happens with an application. It helps you in identifying any classloading issues that can happen due to different java classes that areduplicated with different libraries. To understand the use of CAT, you shouldfirst know the class loading pattern in Weblogic.

Classloading in Weblogic happens in differentlevels.The below image shows the hierarchy in which the class loading happens

System classloader is thetop-level classloader that loads the WebLogic implementation classes andsupporting libraries defined on the classpath (those added to setDomanEnv andcommEnv)

Domain level classloaderis a child to the SYSTEM classloader and loads libraries that are included inthe domain lib directory.

Application level classloader is the next in order. WebLogic Server automatically creates a hierarchy of classloaders whenan application is deployed. The root classloader in this hierarchy is theAPPLICATION classloader and it loads modules defined in the application,including EJBs, as well as java EE shared libraries and libraries included inthe configured library directories for the application.

For each web application, a child classloader is created and it loads the shared JavaEE libraries as well as the libraries and compiled classes in the WEB-INFfolder.

What happens if the CAT find issues in the class loadingpattern of the application

WebLogic has a feature called the Filtering ClassLoaderwhich overrides the TOP-DOWN classloading and essentially enables child-firstclassloading. When filter is enabled, priorityis given to the resources from the child ofthe FilteringClassLoader (an application classloader) before the onesfrom the system classloader . This will be mainly used when the version used bysystme class loader or top level class loaders are different from the onerequired by the application.

Login to http://host:port/wls-cat/ and enter your credentials.

CAT will suggest you solutions to overcome the conflicts which is also a goodfeature.

Advanced Weblogic Scripting(WLST) with Record functionality

Weblogic Console has been a really good tool for administrating all server related configurations. One of the innovative features I liked in weblogic console was the Record option. It’s an amazing utility that allows us to capture the steps involved in server configuration. The recording gets stored as a collection of WLST commands that got executed behind the scenes in a python script file.

The Recording option can be made automatic based on the Preferences. It starts recording when you obtain a lock on the domain configuration and stops recording when you activate your changes, undo your changes, release the lock, or lose the lock. This feature is not available when "Automatically Acquire Lock and Activate Changes" (under "User Preferences") is enabled. When this is disabled we can have the manual Record option.

Capturing Business Events @Oracle BPM 11g

This blog will be the first in series of blogs I will be writing on Oracle BPM suite. In this blog I will look at different options available in Oracle BPM for tracking and monitoring the business process. So how do we get started on monitoring part? In BPEL we used to have sensors and it can be monitored on BAM dashboards, AIA had audit logging mechanisms which we had to invoke to get the information logged. In BPM we have BAM Data Objects as well as BPM Process Cubes. So what/how do we feed these monitoring mechanisms? That’s what we will be focusing on in this blog.

Capturing the business events

To get started with this the analyst need to follow the below steps

Identify KPI’s and process metrics
Create Business indicators to capture metrics
Identifying Sampling points for capturing business indicators
Enable publishing using BAM or BPM Process Cubes
Validate and deploy

I will be focusing on the initial 3 steps, as step 4 is on enabling the BAM Data objects and BPM Process cubes, step5 on deployment.

1. Identify KPI’s and process metrics

First step will be to identify the KPI’s and process metrics. KPI’s help an organization define and measure progress toward organizational goals. They are quantifiable measurements, agreed to beforehand, that reflect the critical success factors of an organization. Process metrics are measurements of the steps of a process. Steps generally have completion milestones, and processes are generally measurable in business terms such as timeliness and cost.

2. Create Business indicators to capture metrics

Business Indicators are project data objects that are used to store the value of the KPI’s of your process. i.e they can store the value of an indicator you want to measure in your process. Oracle BPM gives you 3 options to define business indicators, and it needs to chosen based on the information type of the value.

a. Dimension

It defines specify how the data need to be picked. Dimension store the value of a KPI that you can use to group the values of the measure business indicators in your process.

eg:-region,ordertype

b. Measure

Measure will help you capture numerical data which signifies a value which will help you in analytics

Eg:-salestotal

c. Counters

Counters are type of measures used for no.of occurrence, keeps track of the number of times an instance completes a certain activity

3. Identifying Sampling Points for capturing business indicators

At runtime when the BPMN Service Engine runs the activity in the process it stores data about the process to the BPM Cubes and Oracle BAM Data Objects. This data comes from the sampling points defined in the project.

Sampling points are broadly divided into two.

a. Build-in Sampling Point

- configured at project, process and activity level

o generate sampling for all user tasks

o generate sampling for start/end of process

o generate sampling for start/end of activity

- Dimensions are always captured

- Sampling point settings can be overridden at different levels.

b. User defined Sampling Point

- Measurement marks

Measurement marks store the following data into the Process Analytics databases:

The value of the process default measures
The value of the measure business indicators associated to that measurement mark
The value of the dimensions defined in the process

(i) Single Measurement

To sample business indicators at a specific point in process

(ii) Counter Mark

It is used to track the number of times the instance runs the particular activity

(iii) Interval(start & end)

This will measure a business indicator in a section of your process Always use these measurement marks to monitor critical sections of your process

What Happens @ Measurement Marks

The BPMN Service Engine stores the values of the measure business indicators associated with the pair of measurement marks to the Process Analytics databases. It also stores the values for the dimensions and default measures for that process section.

That’s pretty much for today on the capturing of business events in BPM.

Executing WLST - offline and online

I recently got a query on one of my blogs regarding the WLST commands related to SOA suite that can be run in different modes. –offline and online

1. online (connected to a running Administration Server or Managed Server instance)

2. offline (not connected to a running server).

As per the WLST documentation for SOASuite customWLST commands , the sca_deployComposite and sca_undeployComposite can be executed offline. So what does this offline and online mean?

The offline and online are specific to WLST. When you use connect() command in WSLT you are connecting to the server and becoming online, but if you wish to remain offline you can use disconnect() and exit the online session. The online and offline should not be implied as the running status of the server. If the server is shutdown these commands will fail as it requires the hostname and port and connects to it. These commands will work even if the soa-infra is shutdown.

The commands work properly when WLST is online. For testing the WLST command offline, I brought down the server and then executing it offline.

But since the commands require serverURL and it does validate the connection to host and port.

I will show the difference between offline and online mode with sca_undeploy command.

SOA-INFRA in Warning state due to BPM MDB’s - MDB application soa-infra is NOT connected to messaging system

One of the customers had the following issue where MDB’s where showing MDB application soa-infra is NOT connected to messaging system in one of their SOA environment. CubeActionMDB, BAMActionMDB, PeopleQueryMDB are added as part of the BPM suite.

These MDB’s are internally used by BPM.
Cube Action MDB:: A message driven bean (MDB) is used to trigger aggregation and persistence of the analytical data to the BPM cube schema stored in the SOA Service Infrastructure database.
BAM Action MDB:: A message driven bean (MDB) is used to publish analytical data towards the BAM adapter installed as part of the SOA Service Infrastructure.

Issue

The issue is caused by missing BPM Topics and connection factories.

This causes the MDB deployments in soa-infra to fail causing the soa-infra application to go into a warning state.

Create missing BPM Topics and connection factories.
Create a topic with the below JNDI names and target those to the SOASubDeployment (please make sure SOASubDeployment is targeted to one JMS Server on SOA Server).
1. jms/bpm/PeopleQueryTopic
2. jms/bpm/MeasurementTopic

Create the below connection factories (All are XA enabled connection factories) and target them into a SOA server (where soa-infra application is targeted to).
1. jms.bpm.PeopleQueryConnectionFactory
2. jms.bpm.CubeCommandXAConnectionFactory
3. jms.bpm.BAMCommandXAConnectionFactory

After the above changes, restart the SOA Servers and check the application deployment status.

JDev11g PS2 - XSLT designer limitations

There will be scenarios when you need to pass a counter variable /any status value into a transformation. Since Jdev 11g design supports multiple source transformation it’s easy to pass multiple variables as input into XSLT. The only issue that developers will encounter is the below error.

"Source parts of variables are either simple type or complex type, thus cannot be used to create mapper file".

1. If you try to use a variable which is a simple type created in BPEL, it will through up this error.

Workaround

As a workaround you can create an element in XSD which is of complex type

Workaround

You will have to copy the types and message type definition to the WSDL file which is associated with any of the partner link present in the process. This is not a good practice as we are modifying the end system /interacting system wsdls, for internal use of the process flow.

So the best approach will be to use the first workaround as it is clean and neat and serves the purpose.

B2B Callout - Inbound EDI document Utility

I had written one B2B callout utility which will read the incoming PO-850 document and parse the EDI file and based on the data in EDI document it will prepare a Excel document which will send information regarding the Purchase order. It will handle PO documents send from SDQ and Non-SDQ trading partners. The utility will create a excel sheet and send across the file to support team who can validate whether the values that has been inserted in the Order management system are the same from the 850 edi file send across by trading partner. It will help the customer validate /test the system for 850 inbound flows.

I will be sharing the code in the blog so that you can customize it according to your requirement.

There are some assumptions which I make regarding the edi file that will be send across by the trading partner.

Assumptions for utility to work properly:-

1. The Utility expects the EDI document to use “*” as element delimiter

2. Each line is separated by line separator based on the environment.

3. Each line contains specific Segment information. Refer below for more info on segment name that are expected at start of each line in the document.

To test the inbound utility we need to add 2 jars to the server library -javax.mail_1.4.jar(for sending emails in java) & poi-3.7-20101029.jar(for creating excel file).

Main steps are

1. Copy the jar files javax.mail_1.4.jar & poi-3.7-20101029.jar To $ORACLE_HOME/Oracle_SOA/soa/modules/oracle.soa.ext_11.1.1

2. Set Ant environment variables & go to $ORACLE_HOME/Oracle_SOA/soa/modules/oracle.soa.ext_11.1.1 then Run "ant".

3. Restart Oracle Weblogic SOA managed Server.

The custom jars/classes are loaded at server startup so that the jars are available during runtime.

How to remove unused files/artifacts from MDS?

In development phase of project, we will be adding different artifacts to the MDS so that can be accessed by different processes. In course of development /design changes, applying best practices, there is bound to be lot of unused folders /artifacts lying around in the MDS store. So it is always advised to remove the unwanted artifacts, test the processes before we export them to other environments. I always used a workaround to remove the files, even though it was not the best approach.

Workaround
There is a table called MDS_PATHS where there would be entries corresponding to each artifact. I used to delete the entries from the table and the artifacts never used to show up, even though there will be entries in other related tables.

BestApproach
The best approach/solution is to use WLST command for cleaning up the MDS store. There is a function called deleteMetadata in WLST which will do the job for you.
This is how Oracle documentation describes the command. It deletes the selected documents from the application repository. When this command is run against repositories that support versioning, that is a database-based repository, delete is logical and marks the tip version (the latest version) of the selected documents as "deleted" in the MDS repository partition.

For running deleteMetada function you need a minimum of 3 inputs

- application - since we are deleting from shared artifacts of soa-infra, the value should be soa-infra

- server - value should be ‘soa_server1’ or the server u use for SOA other than admin server.

- docs – the folder path or artifact which you want to delete.

Avoiding invalid composites at server startup -Abstract V/s Concrete WSDL

One year back I got a chance to help a team working on AIA PIP migration project, the team was stuck with compilation issues of processes that gets migrated to 11g. All processes were using concrete WSDL of dependent processes which were not even ready. That’s when as a best practice we replaced all concrete WSDL’s with Abstract WSDL. Similar issue happens during startup of the server. While loading processes from MDS, there used to be issues related services being unavailable due to the order of process loading. How to add/modify BPEL /B2B/Mediator (component) properties – Where it gets stored?

In 11g first release there were properties which could be modified by navigating to $DOMAIN_HOME/soa_domain/config/soa-infra/configuration/ folder. All the config files related to different components used to be present in this folder.

But from subsequent releases the component properties were given an MBean interface for modifying the values. These values get directly updated in the MDS. This blog explains how to modify the values and where in turn it gets stored.

Properties for B2B, BPEL, Mediator, SOA-INFRA, Business rules, Adapter, EDN, workflow can be updated using the Mbeans. I will be taking the example of BPEL properties to show the way.

There are 2 ways of navigating to the properties via MBean.

1. Soa-infra > Administration > System MBean Browser

Application Defined MBeans >oracle.as.soainfra.config > Server :soa_server1

>B2BConfig >b2b

>BPELConfig >bpel

2. Soa-infra > SOA Administration >BPEL Properties

Both the links will lead you to same MBean properties page.

Once you update the value, it gets directly updated in MDS. You can directly go and check in MDS.

Create a MDS connection.

The property files are available in

MDS -- > soa > configuration >default > bpel –config.xml

>b2b-config.xml

> soa-infra-config.xml

This will help you in verifying whether the values are updated properly.

Adding custom jars/classes to Weblogic server -how it works

One of the queries I got was on how to add custom jars to the weblogic server. This is described in detail in Oracle documentation. I will be just explaining on how it works.

As you know a domain is a set of WebLogic servers with a central administration point (the Admin Server) and a central configuration repository (config. xml). A managed server is a WebLogic server instance running in a single JVM on a single machine with a targeted set of applications. If you go through the config.xml you will find a list of libraries that need to be loaded and added to the class path. One of them is the oracle extension library named oracle.soa.ext_11.1.1.

To add custom jars :

You can add custom classes and JAR files to an SOA composite application. A SOA extension library for adding extension classes and JARs to an SOA composite application is available in the $ORACLE_HOME/soa/modules/oracle.soa.ext_11.1.1 directory. For Oracle JDeveloper, custom classes and JARs are added to the application_name/project/sca-inf/lib directory.

To add custom classes:

Copy the classes to the classes directory. If the classes are used in bpelx:exec, you must also add the JARs in bpelcClasspath in bpel-config.xml. The bpel-config.xml is stored in soa/ folder in MDS.

Run "ant".
Restart Oracle WebLogic Server.

Open the oracle.soa.ext.jar.
